Ephemeris I

Definition of Ephemeris: A table showing the positions of a heavenly body on a number of dates in a regular sequence.

‘Ephemeris’ is a visual timeline journeying the relationship between hair loss, mood and self. It speaks of the desire to understand the cause and cure for hair loss in women; and the emotions that go with it. Panic, grief, and shame.

This project became a research piece. I noted the quantity of hair I saw fall, my mood and my health. Overtime, these notes became drawings which formed the basis of this project. I recreated the drawings as a set of small artworks; I wanted these pieces to mimic intricate tokens, whilst still vulgar and unsettling. The outcome of each art work varied; some looked like threads of interwoven gold, brittle yet rigid and encased in bell jars, while others looked to be painful, almost menstrual. Pearl adornments became bonelike cysts, and delicately woven threads became knotted, stretched and cast aside.

Each pattern formed by the dropped hair is intrinsically linked to a set of personal circumstances and mood, laid out chronologically as a large visual calendar. I created over 30 of these pieces, each measuring 20 x 20 cm.

‘Ephemeris’ was part of the group exhibition ‘Imprints’ which took place at Photobook Cafe in February 2024.
